Bringing Ballet Abroad: Pioneering Women of the RAD in Canada

A NEW virtual exhibit celebrating 100 years of the RAD has been launched by Dance Collection Danse.

Curated by Amy Bowring, the exhibition focuses on ‘the story of the RAD in Canada and is largely about extraordinary women like Dorothy Cox-Scruton, Alison Sutcliffe, Bettina Byers, Gweneth Lloyd, Betty Farrally, Mara McBirney and many others who found a place, voice and purpose inside the organization’.

As Bowring says in the exhibit’s introduction…

“With dance and women both being marginalized subjects in world history, it seems fitting to celebrate the achievements of these particular women whose passion and dedication to ballet training would eventually carry through generations impacting hundreds of thousands of Canadian youth.”
