CPD Workshops (Genée 2019)


We are hosting two days of CPD workshops on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 August alongside the Genée in Toronto.

Workshops will take place at Canada’s National Ballet School and include Silver Swans™ Licensee Training, Insight into Solo Seal, Preparing for Optimal Dance, Dance Injury Prevention & Management, and Understanding Anatomical & Biomechanical Principles of Dance.


Wednesday 28 August
09:00 – 17:00 Silver Swans™ Licensee Training

This one-day workshop introduces experienced ballet teachers to Silver Swans, with a focus on safe and inclusive practice for adults and strategies to maximise their experience. Completion of the workshop will entitle teachers to deliver Silver Swans branded ballet classes, including access to the Silver Swans logo and marketing toolkit.
Please note that this particular workshop is only open to RAD Registered Teachers.

09:00 – 13:00 Preparing for Optimal Dance

This half day course examines environmental, physical, and psychological aspects of preparing for dance—both in the studio and on the stage. Dance teachers will learn to ready the dance space, and create a positive learning/performance environment. They will learn to conduct an effective physiological warm up, and about the use of psychological skills to reduce stress/anxiety and to enhance performance.

14:00 – 18:00 Understanding Anatomical & Biomechanical Principles of Dance

This half day course examines the structure and healthy functioning of the dancing body. Dance teachers will review skeletal and muscular anatomy. They will learn to assess static and dynamic alignment, and to provide appropriate placement and movement cues. They will also learn to how to apply biomechanical principles to improve dance training and technique.

Thursday 29 August
09:00 – 13:00 Insight into Solo Seal

This half day practical workshop will take participants through preparing candidates for the Solo Seal award.  The workshop looks at the structure of the award, how teachers and candidates work together in selecting the solo variations to perform, and an understanding of how to implement the criteria against which the solos will be judged.  The workshop concludes with participants exploring through practice approaches to choreographing the Finale component of the award and identifying suitable music accompaniment.

09:00 – 13:00 Dance Injury Prevention & Management

This half day course examines the development, management, and prevention of dance injuries. Dance teachers will learn to identify and address injury-risk factors, and how to apply biomechanical principles to prevent common dance injuries. They will also learn to apply injury management procedures, and how to appropriately support dancers returning to dance post injury.

About the Tutors

Justine joined London City Ballet at the age of seventeen and went on to enjoy a performing career spanning 18 years. In 2003, while still dancing, she graduated from the Professional Dancer’s Teaching Diploma with Distinction.

Justine has taught for English National Ballet School, Central School of Ballet, Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, Tring Park, Laine Theatre Arts, The Urdang Academy, The Place, Laban, BBO Scholars, the RAD Dance School, as an anatomy lecturer and ballet teacher at London Studio Centre and Ballet Mistress for companies such as Ballet Ireland, Lisbon Dance Company, and European Ballet.

In addition to her regular work for the BA (Hons) in Ballet Education programme at the Royal Academy of Dance and Laine Theatre Arts, Justine is also a tutor for the Royal Ballet School’s Inspire Seminars and teaches on their Easter and Summer schools. Justine has an interest in Benesh Movement Notation having taught it at the Royal Ballet School, White Lodge and on Academy programmes and courses. She also continues to pursue a varied freelance career in several vocational schools and has devised lesson plans in collaboration with the Academy and distributors eOne Films UK based on the animated film, Ballerina. She is tutor for numerous Royal Academy of Dance courses including international summer schools and Continuing Professional Development workshops. Justine was the assistant to Lynn Wallis OBE, in the choreographing of the Patron’s Lunch Parade celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday. She is also a former Chairman of the London and Middlesex Regional Advisory Board and a current Trustee of the Academy.

Justine is a tutor, and assessor for the Professional Dancer’s Teaching Diploma (PDTD) and contributes towards the Professional Dancer’s Postgraduate Teaching Certificate in Berlin, having written one of the modules for this programme of study.
Justine holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching from the University of the Arts, London, and the Master of Teaching (Dance) from the University of Surrey/ Royal Academy of Dance.

Andrea Downie
Andrea Downie is the founder and Director of EnhanceDance, an educational initiative that shares evidence-based best practices in dance teaching, training and performance. She is also a founding member and the Immediate Past President of Healthy Dancer Canada, an organization dedicated to enhancing the health, well-being and performance of all dancers. Andrea is third-party teacher tutor for Royal Academy of Dance Canada, a registered provider with Safe in Dance International for the Healthy Dance Certificates, and the course provider for the Level 1 Conditioning-with-Imagery (C-I) TrainingTM teacher certification. She is a certified teacher of C-I TrainingTM and Simonson Technique.

Andrea received her HonBFA in Dance Performance and her MA in Dance Studies from York University. She completed her professional training at Dance New Amsterdam (Dance Space Centre) in New York City, and performed with Jody Oberfelder Dance Projects while there. Andrea specializes in motor learning and developed the Multisensory Pedagogical Model for Dance Skill Instruction to Enhance Dance Skill Learning. She has experience working in post-secondary dance and kinesiology programs, secondary school dance programs, pre-professional dance programs, and at arts centres and private dance studios. She works actively as a guest dance instructor, teacher tutor, choreographer and speaker across Canada, enthusiastically sharing her passion for dance with teachers and dancers of all ages, levels and abilities.

Sarah Haslock-Johnson
Sarah Haslock-Johnson is a graduate of the College of the Royal Academy of Dance, a CPD tutor and CBTS Tutor for the RAD Faculty of Education.

Sarah has an accomplished career in the entertainment industry in both the UK and Asia. She performed in numerous music shows such as the Brit Music Awards and MTV awards. She has also performed with artists such as Simply Red, Boyzone and Robbie Williams. While in Asia, she had the opportunity to tour with Andy Lau, and it was during this time she signed a recording contract with BMG records. She is also a choreographer for Weissman’s Designs for Dance. Sarah is the director of her own program in Atlanta, GA. Her students compete at the highest levels and her program has gained over $500,000 in dance educational scholarships. She also runs a not-for-profit organization that supports dancers to attend dance educational events that they could not necessarily afford independently.
